Beginning Monday, August 12, 2002, NASA began charging users for the distribution of ASTER data from the Land Processes DAAC at the EROS Data Center.  The LBA-ECO Project Office does not anticipate a major impact on LBA science teams. Nevertheless, if ASTER data plays a major role in your research, you should review these changes.

Users who order ASTER data will be asked to pay the marginal cost for distribution.  The marginal price for ASTER data will be $55 per scene plus a small handling charge per order. The charge is the same regardless of delivery method (physical media or ftp).
Henceforth, when you order ASTER data products through the EOS Data Gateway (EDG) you will be shown a price for the ASTER data products.  You can ignore this message as the LP DAAC will not be requesting you to make payment for the ASTER products.
NASA is aware that we may have missed some users who should be authorized to receive ASTER data without the distribution charge.  These may include your co-investigators or graduate students.  ESE has developed a process by which users can request to be added to the list.

To request approval, users should fill out the application form found at this URL: http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/aster/application.html. The application will be automatically emailed to NASA HQ for approval.
Any questions on the ASTER data policy may be directed to Vanessa Griffin 301-614-5365 vanessa.l.griffin.1@gsfc.nasa.gov or Martha Maiden (202-358-1078) or Tim Gubbels (202-358-0442)
