  • Two Brazilian students were added to this team in 2003:

    • Risonaldo Leal Lima completed undergraduate studies in Biology at Faculdades Integradas do Tapajós (FIT) in Santarém, PA and has acted as a field team leader, replacing José Mauro Sousa, who initiated graduate studies at CENA-USP;

    • Irene Cibelle Gonçalves Sampaio, who initiated scientic research under the supervision of this team in Santarém, as part of her undergraduate studies.

  • During 2002 additional invited seminars were given about LBA-ECO project at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, at the Carnegie Institute of Washington, and at Princeton University. All of these presentations included a brief description of the LBA-ECO program and the direct collaborations with Brazilians.

  • Radon-222 and Stable Carbon Isotope Tracing of Carbon Exchange and Trace Gas Fluxes in Old Growth and Selectively Logged Amazonian Forests

    This seminar, focusing on selective logging in Amazonia and tracing of carbon exchange, was presented at Federal University of Pará to approximately 60 students.

    The slide show was translated into Portuguese providing considerable amusement to the audience. The seminar was followed by over an hour of audience participation and discussion with many photo-opportunities ensued as the event adjourned.

    As a result of the strong interaction with the participants, several visits at UFPa and meetings with UFPa faculty and students were scheduled for discussions of individual research projects and teaching activities.

  • Presentations at the University of Hawaii and UCN-Chapel HIll

    Dr. Christopher Martens (University of North Carolina - UNC) gave several presentations at the University of Hawaii and at UNC-Chapel Hill for dissemination and discussions of research results accomplished by this team. Presentations included a brief description of the LBA-ECO program and the direct collaborations among US and Brazilian scientists.
