As a contribution to training and education we intend to provide continued support to help Claudio Barbosa, Thiago Silva, Lauren Belger and Alexandre Kemenes complete the analysis of their data and preparation of their Ph.D. theses and subsequent publications. Our proposed budget commits about 35% to support training and education. Evlyn Novo and Bruce Forsberg are actively involved in postgraduate teaching programs at INPE and INPA. Melack has joined the students at their field sites and met regularly with them in Brazil as part of their mentoring. As a contribution to capacity building in Amazonia we have set-up a fully equipped gas chromatograph available for use in Forsberg’s laboratory at INPA. In addition, we have set-up a digital videography analysis station at INPE with technical support for its use by those in need of high-resolution optical data.
