Outreach to North America/Europe

2001

  • Emissions of Nitrous Oxide and Nitric Oxide from Soils of Native and Exotic Ecosystems of the Amazon and Cerrado Regions of Brazil"

This paper, by Davidson, Eric A.; Bustamante, Mercedes M.C.; and de Siqueira Pinto, Alexandre, was published on "The Scientific World Journal, November 2001"

    Synopsis:

Soils are important sources of atmospheric nitrous oxide and nitric oxide. Conversion of native tropical ecosystems to agriculture may change this source. Studies in the Amazon Basin indicate that some young cattle pastures have higher emissions than forests, but old pastures and secondary forests have lower emissions, thus decreasing Basin-wide emissions slightly. Fewer studies exist for the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) region, but they also show either decreases or modest increases in emissions from agricultural soils.
