Internship and Exchange Programs

2003

  • Students from the University of Georgia and Iowa State University on a study tour in Brazil

The "Sustainable Systems in Brazil Study Tour" was provided for 10 students from the University of Georgia and Iowa State University during July 12–July 30, 2003, under the coordination of Dr. Daniel Markewitz (University of Georgia).

The goal was to investigate the effects of land use change and forest harvest on soils, stream waters, and people.

2004

  • “You Can’t Eat GNP”, a book by Eric A. Davidson

During a seminar held at the Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Comercial (SENAC) in São Paulo, Brazil, Dr. Eric A. Davidson discussed some topics of his book You Can't Eat GNP: Economics as Though Ecology Mattered published in 2000.

In this book, Dr. Davidson explains linkages between economics and ecology in examples ranging from the present legacy of a 19th century cotton farmer in North Carolina to the future impacts of a modern day rancher’s decisions in the Amazon Basin. The author states that the interdependence of ecology and economics is being reflected in language. He shows that economists and ecologists are now communicating across disciplines in a new field called "ecological economics". Excerpts of this publication can be seen on You Can't Eat GNP: Economics as Though Ecology Mattered
