Activity Description

Educational Materials

2003

  • Research activities and educational materials

Information on research activities and educational materials produced by this team was posted on the University of Maryland Geography Research Newsletter, including a project summary and a brief report of the October 2003 field campaign. They can be found at the Department of Geography at the University of Maryland website.

Formal Training

2003

  • Supervision of intern at NASA/Goddard

Dr. Jeff Morisette mentored Heater Bain, a UNH/GSFC “Research and Discovery” program participant, during the summer 2003. Previous work of this student with Dr. George Hurtt linked census data with AVHRR-based land cover (c. 1992). Now, under the supervision of Dr. Morisette, Heater Bain extended her previous work to include MODIS land cover.

Short Courses / Seminars / Workshops / Conferences

2003

  • IBAMA special session on Satellite-derived fire and burn scar products throughout the Amazon

This session was held in conjunction with the 9th Brazilian Remote Sensing Symposium, April 5-10, 2003.

  • ASTER fire map and time series analyses

During the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) Fall Seminar Series held at the University of Maryland, in College Park, 2003, Dr. Morton presented preliminary results of the ASTER fire map and analyses.

2004

  • ENVI/IDL software training session

This session, held at NASA GSFC, was jointly funded by LC-23 and the Invasive Species Forecasting System Project.

  • Ground Based Accuracy Assessments for Fire and Deforestation Events Workshop

This one-day workshop, held in Brasilia, July 26, was organized in conjunction with the CEOS Land Product Validation subgroup and the GOFC/GOLD fire implementation team.

There were 33 attendees, including 8 Brazilian students (6 from the Amazon) and participation of 12 Amazonian institutions and universities.

The workshop included presentations from Embrapa, INPE, IBAMA, NASA, CEOS, GOFC/GOLD, University of Maryland (UMd), and the Federal University of Acre (UFAC).

A major result of the workshop was to initiate a Brazilian field validation network with a specific protocol for mapping deforestation and burn scars and sharing data and communications between field and remote sensing teams. This network will be utilized for research activities in 2005; data and documentation will be distributed using the infrastructure established after the meeting.
