2002  

  • Introduction to Ecology and Regional Land-Use Impact on Forests

    This course on environmental management was conducted in Alter do Chão, Santarém by IPAM, from Sept. 5th to 13th, 2002. It brought together 13 regional leaders to discuss environmental problems along the Cuiabá-Santarém corridor. One of its modules was taught at the LBA research site located on the Santarém-Cuiabá road, km 83.

    Field visits to forest fire plots were organized providing an excellent opportunity to explain the importance of the relationship between land use and forest fires, one of the major study areas of this group.

2003  

  • The Problems of Forest Degradation by Logging and Fire: How some of these activities can be monitored using satellite data

    This lecture was presented to representatives of the Brazilian Ministry of Environment (MMA), IBAMA, and the Environment Secretary of the Amazonas State in visit to Manaus, in March 2003.

    It addressed major questions concerning forest degradation by logging and fire, and how some of these activities can be monitored using satellite data.

  • Deforestation and Forest Fragmentation

    Lecture presented at the Brazilian Ministry of Environment (MME) in Brasília, in June 2003.

  • Forest Fragmentation and Degradation by Logging and Fire in Western Pará

    This three-day workshop, held in Santarém, Pará, in October 2003, brought together representatives of INCRA, IBAMA, CDP, CEPLAC, EMATER and ADA to discuss the relation between logging and fire in the Santarém region.
