Dataset Abstract:

The Upper Acre River Basin, a tri-national basin located at the frontier of Bolivia, Brazil and Peru with an area of 7600 square kilometers is one of the few tri-national basins in Brazil and can be seen as an example in micro-scale of the function of a basin shared by territories of different countries. The integrated management of this basin depends on, among other things, sharing compatible data from three countries. To contribute to the integrated management of this basin, topography data was generated by the Sector of Land Use and Global Change Studies at the Federal University of Acre.
Political divisions (municipalities): This data set contain vectors in ArcView shapefile format of political divisions (municipalities) of Acre State of Brazil; Madre de Dios Region of Peru and Pando Department of Bolivia. These vectors are from Environmental Institute of Acre (IMAC), Research Institution of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP), and ZONISIG/PANDO from the HERENCIA institution of Bolivia. These vectors were used to generate the municipalities area distribution in the basin. These vectors are also provided here in xls format. To do this, all the vectors were reprojected to UTM DATUM WGS 84. Basin limits (limite_de_cuenca): To generate the basin limits we used the Digital Elevation Model of Shuttle
Radar Topography Mission (DEM/SRTM). We applied the Watershed module of the
Software IDRISI 32. The result was reformatted to a vector format and exported to a ArcView shapefile. The shapefile was integrated with the municipalities vectors using SPRING 4.1 software. To verify the result we used the hydrography network of the ZEE/AC in 1:100.000
scale and the DEM image. We used Cut information plan tool of SPRING 4.1 to obtain the municipalities area
distribution in the basin. These data are provided in the file: planilha_municipios_bacia.csv file, and contains the following fields: Column A: Municipality Name Column B: Country Name Column C: Urban/Agricultural Nucleus Column D: Total area of the municipality (km²) Column E: Municipality area in the basin (km²) Column F: % of the municipality in the basin in relation to its total area Column G: % of the basin in the municipality Data Quality Statement: The Data Center has determined that this data set has missing or incomplete data, metadata, or other documentation resulting in diminished usability of this product. User beware. Known problems: Much of the documentation provided, file names, classes, and file content are in Portuguese. The key data, however, are ArcView shapefiles, and may have intrinsic value that warrants further processing to develop documentation needed for long-term archive.
