Dataset Abstract:

Biomass estimates in tons per hectare from four study areas in the Brazilian Amazon. The estimates are based on the classification results from two JERS-1 data channels and one RadarSat data channel and are reported in a separate text file and a geotiff format file for each study area.
Caution: Due to limited resources, these data have been neither validated nor quality-assured for general use. For that reason, extreme caution is advised when considering the use of these data.
- Any use of the derived data is not recommended because the results have not been validated.
- However, the DEM, vectors, and orthorectified SAR data can be used if the user understands how these were produced and accepts the limitations.

The Manaus and Tapajos sites have the following data:

*dem.raw: DEM data, 2-bytes/pixel, pentium-byte-order

*georef.txt: Georeferencing information for the site,

including #pixels, #lines,

UTM zone/row, Ellipsoid,

and UTM corner coordinates.

*radar.geotiff: 3-channel geotiff file of the orthorectified

radar data.

2 is L-band dry season

3 is C-band

data has been scaled such that it is

in dB power, with -40 dB linearly

scaled to DN=0, and 0dB scaled to be DN=255.

*classification.geotiff: 1-channel land-cover data.

4=undisturbed forest

They each have 2 separate rasters: one raster for the DEM and

vectors, a different raster for the radar data, land-cover, and biomass.

Data Application and Derivation:

Biomass was estimated using the land-cover class first, with flat areas being set to zero biomass, and tall vegetation areas set to 255, the short vegetation areas were set to 10 Tons/ha, and the regrowth areas used a formula based on the ground truth we had for several regrowth areas, as supplied by Prof. Richard Lucas. The formula we used was: biomass in tons/hectare = exp( 5.725 + 0.052 *L_in_dB + 0.044*C_in_dB) +0.5. The L-band data used was from the dry season dataset.

The supporting database files are in PCI format (*.pix). PCI is an image-processing software package developed by PCI Geomatics, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, near Toronto.
