Dataset Abstract:

We used Landsat data from 1984 (MSS or multispectral scanner), 1994 (TM5 or thematic mapper 5), 1995 (TM5) and 1999 (TM7) and field work to examine the land use, land cover, and land cover change dynamics in the county of Sao Francisco do Para located in the Bragantina region, the oldest agriculture frontier in Amazonia. These data are only for the municipio (county) and immediate region. The region is east of the major city of Belem.

Data Application and Derivation:

Supervised classification of the 1999 imagery showed that forests of differing ages classes occupied 22%, 13%, 9%, and 6% of the area, young to old, respectively.

Kappa statistic and field evaluations were used with the 1999 classification to determine classification accuracies.
