Dataset Abstract:

This data set contains soil characteristics after a selective logging event. The data are categorized by type of land cover or disturbance. The categories are: Forest, Gap, Skids, Roads, Deck Edges, and Deck Center. The soil characteristics were determined in March of 2003.
Data Quality Statement: The Data Center has determined that this data set has missing or incomplete data, metadata, or other documentation resulting in diminished usability of this product. User beware.
Known Problems: The data file is an Excel spreadsheet containing several worksheets of data. Each worksheet contains stacked sections of data with different headers and different formats. Column headings are abbreviated and undefined. Coded text values are not defined. No additional information was available to properly document the data file for long-term archive.

Process Description:

Data Acquisition Materials and Methods:

Soil samples were dried at 70 degrees C for 10 days and subsamples were ground and sieved (2 mm) with charcoal and large roots removed. Total C, N, 13C, and 15N were measured on an elemental analyzer mass spectrometer (Delta Plus, Finnigan Mat, San Jose, CA, USA) at CENA (University of Sao Paulo). Exchangeable P, Ca, K, and Mg were measured on 5g subsamples of soil

extracted with Mehlich III (Tran and Simard 1993) and analyzed on the ICP-AES (SpectroFMV-3). pH was measured in water. Two analytical replicates per sample were analyzed using reference material (2710 Montana Soil, NIST) for total soil nutrients.
